You’ve heard the saying “the pen is mightier than the sword,”
but what does that mean in today’s world?
Communication is more important to get right now than ever before, because our written words reach more people in a second than imaginable even a decade ago. The downside of all this cyber-connectivity and hyper-consumption is it encourages lazy reading. People skim and skip, their thumbs obliterating half of your content as it whizzes by.
Whether your message is a 90,000-word opus, a 6,000-word article, or a 100-word social post, you owe it to your message, your readers, and yourself to make every word matter.
When your writing catches readers’ attention, you perform magic. The world slows down and the thumb stops speed scrolling. People stop browsing, and they read. And if you’re being read, well, my friend, you are connecting the first threads of relationship, creating understanding, and building trust.
You have something to share with the world that has power, meaning, and could even change lives. You know this because you’ve built your brand on it and you’ve done well. You also know this because the people you serve tell you so, gratefully acknowledging the influence your life’s mission has had on their lives. Now, you’re ready to reach more people, maybe even millions more.
There is something magical about books. You hold them in your hands. You let the rest of the world fall away and slip into the realm of the page. You forget yourself, your problems, your to do list and enter a landscape of the mind. We know that reading engages multiple areas of our brains, from visual processing to the information highway connecting the left and right hemispheres. Reading forges new neural pathways, improves memory, and prolongs neurological health. Science is also confirming what book lovers have long known: the paperback is mightier than the e-reader.
Knowing all this, you’re ready to put your message out in book form, to place it in people’s hands, and see them grow. You’re not interested in a business calling card thinly disguised as a book, which is good, because those things aren’t for readers any more than they’re for you and your audience. Those so-called books, with their mass amounts of white space, stock images, and forty-eight point headings are a sales tactic as irritating as infomercials.
You are not marketing. You are messaging.
Your message deserves full attention, the kind that comes with reading, the kind that inspires action and creates change—from your readers’ neural pathways to the way they step into life.
How do you write that book, the one that you’ll be proud to put in people’s hands, that will deliver your message and with it real world change for those who take it to heart?
That’s where I come in.
Expertise, Authority, Trust
You set your bar high—very high—in all you do. This is a large part of your success. It is also why you have a mission and a message, not a mere product. You’ve done a good job spreading your word so far, but you know you can do better. You’re ready to write with skill, knowing, and confidence. You’re ready to stop drafting and start crafting your message to the world.
It is time for your book. But before it can reach the world, you have to write it, and there’s no getting around that little fact. You know why it has to be you. Maybe you’ve tried a so-called ghost writer and got burned. Maybe you need to stand alongside your book and own the entire process. Maybe you know that everything you learn writing this book will make you a more powerful communicator—today and forever. Whatever your particular motivation, you are going to birth this baby.
The Page One Coaching experience is designed for entrepreneurs with a powerful desire to help people, whose time has come to put a book into the world.
The digital marketplace is in constant flux, and marketing strategies change almost daily. People’s perception of goods and services have been changing as a result. New, shiny, bold promises don’t cut it as people, “once burned and twice shy” or tightening their belts as disposable income shrinks, become discriminating consumers. As a result, expertise, authority, and trust have emerged as key qualities they want and you need to have. What establishes these qualities better than a book?
A book is a physical artifact. A book is an endeavor that takes time to produce and time to read. This investment is symbolic of how much both you and your reader care. A book establishes the author’s expertise and authority while creating trust, building a relationship between the author and reader. That relationship is implicit in the text itself; all that it communicates forms a bridge between two conscious minds. The more people the book reaches, the more people share and discuss it, the more that bridge becomes a web spanning thousands or millions of lives.
Of course, only a well-written book with exceptional content can build that web, and many books simply can’t.

Meet Alida
I named my coaching and developmental editing service Word Essential, because I truly believe that every word matters. For over a decade, I’ve been the writer behind the scenes, teaching, coaching, and editing whoever discovered me and my offerings, usually through word of mouth. I love helping others develop writing craft while bringing their own deeply personal projects to life. Whether a novel, memoir, self-help, stories, or essays, if it has narrative, I’m here for you.
A lifelong writer, I’ve been at the head of the classroom almost as long, from high school to masters degree classrooms, including the inescapable Freshman Comp, and even in prisons. I work with writers of all levels with varied styles and goals, including professionals driven to craft more precise and meaningful communication.
